U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked fresh international attention after suggesting that the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed the “Trump Strait.”

Trump made the suggestion on Wednesday, September 2, in a post on his social media platform, claiming that the strategically important waterway was now under U.S. control.

“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT?” Trump wrote, adding that, like America itself, it would be “hotter” than ever before.

The proposal comes amid renewed military tensions between the United States and Iran. The two countries have exchanged attacks in recent days, while the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains highly unstable.

The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy routes, with a significant share of global oil shipments traditionally passing through it. Recent disruptions have sharply reduced shipping activity, adding pressure to international energy markets. Reuters reported that only four commodity vessels passed through the strait on Tuesday, compared with a 10-day average of about 13.

Iran has rejected U.S. claims of control over the waterway. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy previously said it had “full control” of the strait, highlighting the continuing dispute over access to the crucial maritime route.

Trump’s proposed name change would not automatically change the internationally recognized name of the waterway. U.S. presidential authority over geographical names primarily affects how the U.S. federal government refers to locations, while other countries and international organizations are not required to adopt American naming decisions.

The proposal is also the latest in a series of geographical renaming efforts associated with Trump’s presidency, following changes involving the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario in U.S. government usage.

For now, the Strait of Hormuz remains its internationally recognized name, while the region continues to face significant geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
