The commemorative uniforms feature a “NEVER FORGET” message, while the helmets carry the number 37, representing the Rutgers alumni who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
The tribute comes as Rutgers prepares to face Boston College on September 11, exactly 25 years after the attacks. Boston College will also honor 9/11 victims through its annual Red Bandanna Game, commemorating alumnus Welles Crowther, who became known for helping others during the attacks.
For Rutgers, the gesture goes beyond football. With many current players born years after 9/11, head coach Greg Schiano has emphasized the importance of making sure younger generations understand the significance of the day and remember those who were lost.
It’s a powerful reminder that sports can sometimes serve as a way to preserve memory, honor lives and bring communities together.
Some moments are bigger than football. 🇺🇸
