Forever No. 23: Petawawa Hockey Community Grieves Brody Rose, 17, After Cyclist Struck Thursday Night; 19-Year-Old Charged With Impaired Driving Causing Death

PETAWAWA, Ont. — A 23-second moment of silence now carries a painful meaning for the Petawawa hockey community, which is mourning Brody Rose, a 17-year-old U18 Rep player who wore No. 23 and died after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle.
Ontario Provincial Police said the crash happened around 9:10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, on Industrial Avenue. The 17-year-old cyclist was airlifted to a hospital in Ottawa and later died, and OPP announced his death Monday, Nov. 2. Police didn't name him, and the Greater Petawawa Minor Hockey Association identified Brody as the young man who died.
OPP charged a 19-year-old from Petawawa with driving while impaired by a drug and dangerous driving causing death. The person is also accused of a breach of Ontario's cannabis laws and a Highway Traffic Act offence for having a speed measuring warning device. They're held in custody, with a 90-day licence suspension and a week-long vehicle impound. The charges are allegations.
The association called Brody "a remarkable young man and an outstanding player who will be deeply missed." The U18 Rep and U18 B3 games were rescheduled, and 23-second moments of silence were held at three other home games. The Barry's Bay Minor Hockey Association held one Sunday, and groups from Eganville and Renfrew also sent condolences. Hyska's Your Independent Grocer, where Brody worked, said "Our lives were made better by knowing you and you will never be forgotten."
Rest easy, Brody Rose. Forever No. 23.
