GREENACRES, Fla. — Nine people, including a Texas family of four, were killed Sunday afternoon when a Learjet 60 plunged into a South Florida neighborhood, leaving several families grieving at once, according to a family statement and federal investigators.
The jet was flying from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it crashed in Greenacres in Palm Beach County at about 12:50 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Everyone aboard was killed.
In a joint statement shared Monday, relatives identified seven of the people aboard: Texas tech entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife, Helen Sharp, their children Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2, family friends Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, and the children's nanny, Anita Maria Cetina. "Adam and Helen were devoted parents, and Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2, were the light of their lives," the families wrote. Adam's brother Anthony added that "Helen and Adam were the love affair that will last forever."
The two pilots were identified by family and media reports. The co-pilot was 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, a Palm Beach County native who earned her pilot's license at 17 and learned to fly with her father, also a pilot. The captain was identified as Jeff Gregory, 55, by TMZ citing his family. Authorities haven't officially released the victims' names.
Minutes before the crash, air traffic control recordings captured the crew reporting ice, turbulence and a rapid descent. An NTSB briefing Monday said weather will be a major focus, and a preliminary assessment suggests the jet was likely breaking up before impact, scattering debris far from the crash site. No official cause has been determined. For the families of all nine people aboard, a flight that began in Texas ended in unthinkable loss. May those who loved them find comfort, and may the community that lived through this crash find peace.
