For several days, air raid alerts followed by bombings have hit various regions of Ukraine in rapid succession, both day and night. On Saturday, August 29, Kyiv residents woke to a horizon darkened by plumes of smoke, and new explosions echoed after one of the longest raids the capital has endured since the Russian invasion began. At least 38 people were killed after a strike hit an ammunition depot early Friday evening, according to the latest toll announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.

Striking footage filmed along the Kyiv-Chop highway began circulating Friday night, showing a massive initial explosion followed by a series of detonations triggered by ammunition.

Authorities issued a first statement on Saturday morning, providing an initial casualty count that has continued to rise. Zelensky said a military warehouse was struck near the village of Myla, about 20 kilometers from the capital. "The first strike was on an ammunition storage site that definitely shouldn't have been there: a Defense Forces storage facility," he said on Telegram. "Shells, mines, other ammunition and drones detonated. The scale is significant."
