Fintech company OPay has reassured Nigerians that it remains fully operational after a false social media message claimed that the company was planning to shut down its operations in Nigeria.
The company said on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, that it is working with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the circulation of the misleading information.
OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed this during a press conference organised by the company. He said the security agencies are investigating the source of the message and that OPay has provided evidence that could assist in identifying those responsible.
The company also warned that legal action would be taken against individuals found to have deliberately created or distributed the false information.
OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, also stated that the company has no plans to shut down its Nigerian operations.
He urged customers not to make financial decisions based on unverified messages shared through social media or messaging platforms.
The false message had circulated online claiming that OPay would stop operating from September 1 and advising customers to withdraw their funds. OPay previously described the message as false and urged users to rely on its verified communication channels for official announcements.
The development highlights the potential impact of misinformation on financial technology companies, particularly when false claims encourage customers to urgently move or withdraw their funds.
OPay has therefore advised customers to verify major announcements directly through the company’s official communication channels before taking action.
