Live: Broncos pilloried for ill-fitting Reynolds farewell before Storm run riot

The Broncos are on track for a ninth straight loss at Lang Park as the Storm run in five first-half tries after a truncated tribute to departing players, including captain Adam Reynolds.

Reynolds is waving goodbye to his adopted home ground from the sidelines after being ruled out by injury, with a pre-game tribute to him and other players bound for new clubs in 2027 cut short by an advertisement on the big screen.

"You didn't even know there was a send-off, that's how bad it was," former Queensland Maroon Billy Moore said in commentary for ABC Sport.

70' Fa'alogo gets an early rest

By Jon Healy

The Melbourne fullback has been carrying his left shoulder since the opening minutes of the game, and Craig Bellamy finally gives him a break.

Marion Seve comes onto the field to play inside brother-in-law Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown.

Nick Meaney moves to fullback.

69' Broncos take their turn to exploit the new rule

By Jon Healy

Brisbane concedes its seventh try of the night and opts to receive for the first time.

But the Broncos can't capitalise on the extra set.

Another intercept! This time for the Storm!

By Jon Healy

The Broncos have all the numbers out to the left, but Ben Hunt holds the pass too long and throws it too late. Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown flies in off his wing to steal the pass intended for Deine Mariner and goes 80 metres to score.

66' This one's getting a little scrappy

By Jon Healy

The error count is growing from both teams. Fatigue is setting in, as is frustration as the Storm's repeated ruck infringements anger the Broncos.

Munster and Sua keep the Storm train rolling

By Jon Healy

Bodies in motion at speed as the Storm spin it left, creating chaos for the Broncos' defence.

Munster has options galore and chooses to roll in a grubber for Sua Fa'alogo, who has all the time and space to ground the ball in front of Grant Anderson.

The former Stormer cops a bit of lip from his old teammates.

58' Brisbane just can't get it done

By Jon Healy

A slew of penalties and set restarts (all deserved by the way, to the point the Storm probably should have had another player binned) but the Broncos still can't crack the Melbourne line.

The last chance expires as Ben Hunt's pass is low and behind Payne Haas, who can't handle, and Nick Meaney dives on the loose ball.

52' The new rule gets a go!

By Jon Healy

The Melbourne Storm, down a man and on the wrong side of the momentum, opt to receive after conceding points.

So there you go. Doesn't seem fair, but there you go.

The Broncos try a kick into no man's land, and the Storm fumble but regather.

The third kick yields rewards for the Broncos

By Jon Healy

Ben Hunt's bomb goes up, Kotoni Staggs regathers and hooks it infield as he's tackled, then Ezra Mam kicks into the vacant space on the right wing.

It's only Cameron Munster and Ben Hunt in pursuit. Hunt gathers and it looks like Munster might hold him up, but Hunt wriggles free to score.

49' Moses Leo in the sin-bin

By Jon Healy

Alec MacDonald hits a short ball and knocks on, with the Broncos scooping it up and flying down the right flank.

He's dragged down by Tyran Wishart and Moses Leo hits him with "direct" contact, "moderate" force to the head.

Leo is sent to the bin for 10 minutes.

48' Storm applying the blowtorch

By Jon Healy

The errors from Brisbane keep coming and the Storm are putting them under the pump.

A Cameron Munster offload produces some dangerous second-phase play an Jahrome Hughes rolls it into the in-goal to get a fresh set.

41' Storm kick off to start the second half

By Jon Healy

Will it be more of the same or can the Broncos find some fight?

HALF-TIME: The Storm thumping Brisbane 30-10

By Jon Healy

That photo about sums it up.

The Brisbane Broncos have looked ordinary tonight and even the similarly struggling Melbourne Storm are running roughshod over them.

Brisbane has missed 27 tackles as opposed to six for the Storm, according to NRL.com. That is abysmal.

Another shockingly poor performance by this Broncos team in front of their home fans.

The Storm, though, as evidenced by that last try, are just having a bit of fun. And with players like Sua Fa'alogo, Harry Grant, Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster, a bit of off-the-cuff footy could rack up a massive score.

What a try off the banana kick!!

By Jon Healy

From the scrumbase, Harry Grant gets the ball, banana kick chips in behind for Sua Fa'alogo. The initial bounce favours Hayze Perham, but then it takes a wobbly one and he overruns it. Fa'alogo swoops and pops the pass to Tyran Wishart to score under the posts.

A bit of third-place play-off energy to that play from Melbourne.

"Champagne try by the Storm," Billy Moore says on ABC Sport.

38' Broncos cop a tough one, but no challenge

By Jon Healy

VJ Semu is called for a knock-on in a tackle, but it looked like he maintained possession the entire time despite a little shuffle. No captain's challenge, I suppose fearing the replays would show some separation. But again, maybe chance your arm.

Ezra Mam scores on the intercept!

By Jon Healy

Out of absolutely nowhere, the Storm get a little loose and Cameron Munster throws a poor offload.

Ezra Mam swoops, bats the ball into the air to himself, regathers and goes 70 metres to score.

Credit to Alec MacDonald and Cooper Clarke for the chase all the way to the line.

34' New rule yet to get a workout

By Jon Healy

The Broncos have conceded three straight tries in short order but still are yet to opt to receive the kick-off.

Consider me perplexed. With nothing to lose, why not try something a little different? Backing your defence clearly ain't working.

It's a fourth Storm try!

By Jon Healy

The Storm waste no time attacking the left side of Brisbane again, giving Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown some space to move.

He skips out of a diving tackle by Josiah Karapani, steps past a flying Pat Carrigan and carries Deine Mariner over the tryline as he slams it down.

Thu 27 Aug 2026 at 8:27pmThu 27 Aug 2026 at 8:27pm

31' Beware the second kick

By Jon Healy

A floating Jahrome Hughes bomb is allowed to bounce, the Storm regather through Cooper Clarke and Cameron Munster kicks again out wide, but Josiah Karapani can't mark and it goes into touch off his hands.

29' Rough call on the Storm

By Jon Healy

The Broncos load up on one side of the field as they kick off to the right. Cameron Munster fields it on his knees and flings a pass to Sua Fa'alogo, clearly with an idea towards spinning it left and exploiting the limited number of defenders out there, but it's called forward!

Gee, that's a tough call.
