ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. โ Six people were killed in a fiery crash on Florida's Turnpike in Orange County on Friday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). Among the victims were three siblings, identified as Delvena Green, Jakara Milton and Charles Milton.
The crash happened around 9:31 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in the northbound lanes near mile marker 252, close to Weatherby Road. FHP said a Road Ranger assistance truck had been parked in the median with its emergency lights on while its driver helped at an earlier incident. The driver, a 28-year-old Kissimmee man, was then dispatched to help a disabled box truck on the outside shoulder and began moving across the roadway to reach it.
At the same time, a 2023 Chevrolet Traverse was traveling north in the inside lane. Troopers said the SUV's driver failed to avoid the Road Ranger truck. The front left of the Traverse struck the truck's right rear, sending both vehicles off the roadway, where they caught fire.
The SUV's driver and five adult passengers became trapped inside the burning vehicle. All six were pronounced dead at the scene. The Road Ranger driver had minor injuries, was not taken to a hospital, and remained at the scene to assist investigators.
Green, Milton and Milton lost their lives together in the crash, leaving their family grieving three loved ones at once. The names of the other three victims have not been released.
Witnesses told troopers the Traverse was traveling at a high rate of speed and did not have its headlights on. FHP has not said what caused the SUV's driver to miss the Road Ranger truck.
Portions of the northbound Turnpike were blocked for hours while crews worked the scene and investigators documented the wreckage.
