RALEIGH, N.C. โ€” A 24-year-old man was killed late Saturday on Interstate 540 in Raleigh after he stopped to help another driver, according to the Raleigh Police Department.
Officers responded around 10:50 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, to westbound I-540 just past Litchford Road, near the Triangle Town Boulevard exit. They found the man, identified as Trevor Gray, on the right shoulder. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators said a car had been in a single-vehicle crash and came to rest at an angle in the middle of the highway with its lights off. Police said Gray pulled his car onto the left shoulder, got out, and walked into the travel lanes to check on the driver, who was still inside the disabled car.
While Gray was in the road, a second car traveling west struck the disabled car and pushed it into him. The driver of the second car remained at the scene.
Westbound lanes were closed for hours and reopened by about 2 a.m. Sunday. No charges had been filed as of Sunday, and the investigation is ongoing.
