WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A retired police officer from Tabernacle died Wednesday evening in a motorcycle crash, leaving his family, friends and the communities he served grieving, according to Waterford Township police.
Officers responded around 6:18 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, to White Horse Pike and Briarcliff Road after a report of a severely injured motorcyclist. Police said John Burger III, 57, was riding a three-wheeled motorcycle when it struck a vehicle stopped in traffic, and he was thrown from the bike. He was taken to Virtua Voorhees Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Burger served the Medford Lakes Police Department from 1998 to 1999 and the Haddonfield Police Department from 2001 until he retired in 2019. Haddonfield police said he served "with honor, integrity and compassion," and Medford Lakes police also paid tribute to him. The crash remains under investigation, and witnesses are asked to call Capt. Timothy Lyons at 856-767-2134, ext. 203.
In a heartbreaking instant, a journey that once held countless possibilities came to an end. Behind his name is a life that mattered, memories that will remain precious, and loved ones now facing a loss that cannot easily be put into words. May his memory continue to shine in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.
