WICHITA, Kan. โ A 79-year-old Wichita man died Tuesday morning after a collision with a Wichita Fire Department engine, leaving his family, friends and community grieving, according to the Wichita Police Department.
Officers were notified at about 8:49 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, of an injury crash at the intersection of Lincoln Street and Greenwich Road. Police said Engine 20 was traveling north on Greenwich Road with its emergency lights and siren activated, responding to a medical emergency involving a person having difficulty breathing. James Mattson was driving a black Honda CR-V west on Lincoln Street and attempting to turn south onto Greenwich Road when the fire engine struck the driver's side of his vehicle.
The collision pushed the vehicles off the roadway, and they struck a black Dodge Ram pickup. Mattson was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The pickup's driver and the four firefighters aboard Engine 20 were not injured.
The Wichita Police Department is leading the investigation with help from the Kansas Highway Patrol. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
Some farewells arrive without warning. In a moment, an ordinary Tuesday morning became a heartbreaking chapter that can never be rewritten. A journey that continued for 79 years ended unexpectedly, leaving behind memories that will hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Every life is precious, and every loss leaves an absence that cannot simply be filled. Behind every name is a story, behind every life are countless memories, and behind every goodbye is a sorrow that words struggle to capture.
As Wichita mourns, may Mattson's memory remain a gentle light for those who loved him, and may everyone grieving find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
