GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. — A 50-year-old truck driver died Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in Greene County, leaving his family, friends and community grieving, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP).
THP said the crash happened around 5:20 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, near mile marker 26.6. Jonathan Hanmer was driving a 2001 Sterling tractor-trailer south when it ran off the right side of the interstate into a wooded area along the shoulder. The truck struck several trees before coming to rest near the Marvin Road overpass.
Hanmer was not wearing a seat belt, according to THP's preliminary report. He was ejected from the truck and died from his injuries. The truck then caught fire and was destroyed, and the flames spread toward a nearby unoccupied structure. Volunteer firefighters from the Mosheim, Town of Mosheim and United departments responded. Southbound traffic was cut to one lane during the response, and officials said there was no hazardous materials leak. The cause of the crash hasn't been released.
Behind every name in a tragic headline is a human life, a story that mattered and a future that deserved more time. Fifty years of life ended in a moment no one could have imagined. May those mourning his loss find strength in their memories, comfort in one another and peace in the days ahead.
