TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Two women were killed Saturday night in a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound Garden State Parkway in Toms River Township, according to the New Jersey State Police.
Troopers responded around 9:42 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, to milepost 87. Police said a Genesis passenger vehicle had become disabled in the center lane, and a Freightliner tractor-trailer was stopped behind it. Caryn J. Coon, 22, of the Forked River section of Lacey Township, was driving north in a Honda when she struck the rear of the tractor-trailer. Her car then left the roadway and went down a grass embankment.
Moments later, a Ford SUV driven by Amanda K. McHenry, 32, of New York City also struck the rear of the Freightliner. Lauren J. Maturo, 32, of Syosset, N.Y., was in the front passenger seat of the SUV. Both Coon and Maturo suffered fatal injuries.
McHenry was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The tractor-trailer driver had minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported at the scene.
