TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Two women were killed Saturday night in a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound Garden State Parkway in Toms River Township, according to the New Jersey State Police.
Troopers responded around 9:42 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, to milepost 87. Police said a Genesis had become disabled in the center lane, and a Freightliner tractor-trailer was stopped behind it. Caryn J. Coon, 22, of the Forked River section of Lacey Township, was driving a Honda northbound when she struck the rear of the tractor-trailer. Her car then left the road and traveled down a grass embankment.
Moments later, a Ford SUV driven by Amanda K. McHenry, 32, of New York City also struck the rear of the tractor-trailer. Lauren J. Maturo, 32, of Syosset, N.Y., the front-seat passenger in the Ford, and Coon both suffered fatal injuries.
McHenry was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The tractor-trailer driver had minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the New Jersey State Police.
