TUCSON, Ariz. — A 39-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Tucson's east side, leaving his family, friends and community grieving, according to the Tucson Police Department.
Officers and Tucson Fire crews responded around 3:21 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, to the 6800 block of East Speedway Boulevard near Kolb Road. Police said Carlos J. Canez was driving east in a white 2003 Honda Accord at a high speed when it left the road and struck a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt and that speeding was a primary contributing factor.
Police also said initial evidence suggests he may have been using illegal drugs while driving. Medical records will be reviewed to determine whether impairment played a role, and no finding has been announced.
Behind the details of this incident is a human life that can't be reduced to an accident report. Canez was more than a name in the headlines, and his passing deserves compassion and remembrance. May those who knew and loved him find strength during this difficult time, and may the memories he leaves behind bring comfort where words cannot.
