Helen Schubert, 98, of West Sunbury, lost her life Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 8 and Duffy Road in Brady Township, Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania State Police responded to the crash around 11:30 a.m. on September 15. Investigators said Schubert was driving a Subaru Legacy west on Duffy Road when she failed to stop at the stop sign and entered Route 8. A Freightliner traveling along Route 8 then struck the Subaru.
The impact sent both vehicles off the roadway. The Freightliner continued into a telephone pole, while both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were later towed from the scene.
Police said Schubert was wearing a seat belt but died from her injuries. The 55-year-old truck driver, who was from Ambridge, was also wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries. He was not taken to a hospital.
Helen's death marks the end of a life spanning nearly a century. Her official obituary describes her as an active and engaged woman who remained committed to learning, family, faith, and her community well into her later years.
She was a longtime member of Springdale Lutheran Church in West Sunbury and was recently recognized as the congregation's longest-standing member. She also remained involved with the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Slippery Rock University, where she had participated for 25 years.
Her funeral service is scheduled for September 26 at Springdale Lutheran Church in West Sunbury, with burial to follow privately.
The crash remains under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police.
