LOS ANGELES — Director Michael Mann, 83, was hospitalized Saturday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range, according to his representative and the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers responded to a shots-fired call around 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at The Range LA in the 11000 block of Missouri Avenue. They determined the shooting was accidental, and the injured person was taken to a hospital in stable condition. TMZ reported that the person was Mann, an experienced target shooter, who was training at the time. LAPD didn't name him.
Mann's representative confirmed the incident in a statement: "On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released." Some reports say he was trying to holster the gun when it went off.
Mann directed "Heat," "The Insider," "Collateral," "Thief," "The Last of the Mohicans" and "Ferrari," and was an executive producer on the original "Miami Vice." Deadline reported he's scheduled to direct "Heat 2" in January, and someone close to him said the incident won't affect production.
