Heading: Five-Year-Old Girl Killed in Alleged Roadway Shooting in Texas

On Saturday night, September 19, 2026, around 11:30 p.m., Monica Hicks was driving home from her mother’s house with her five children, all under the age of 10, when gunfire reportedly struck the vehicle near Grant Road and Jones Road in Cypress, northwest Harris County.

Hicks said she heard a sudden sound followed by screaming before the vehicle’s rear window shattered. After getting the children out of the vehicle, she found her five-year-old daughter, Zah’layah Walter, unresponsive.

Zah’layah was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Two of her siblings suffered cuts from broken glass. Hicks was not physically injured.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office initially described the incident as an apparent roadway shooting and referred to possible road rage. Hicks said she did not cut off another driver or exchange words with anyone before the shooting. She told authorities that a white pickup truck came alongside her vehicle before the window was shattered.

On Sunday night, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced the arrest of Jeremy Porter, 47. Detectives reportedly used license-plate camera information to help identify and track a truck connected to the investigation.

Porter was booked into the Harris County Jail and faces a capital murder charge in connection with Zah’layah’s death. The charge is an allegation. Porter remains legally presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The family has organized a vigil on Grant Road and a fundraising effort has been established to help cover funeral expenses.

Zah’layah’s death has left her family and community grieving as investigators and prosecutors continue working through the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
