Francine Shumake, 53, and Brenda Baker, 61, are being remembered following a fatal crash on Marksheffel Road in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on August 31, 2026, south of East Gate Street. According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, Shumake was driving a Toyota sedan southbound on Marksheffel Road when the vehicle failed to negotiate a slight curve and entered the northbound lane.
The Toyota then collided with a Chevrolet sedan traveling northbound. Shumake and Baker, who were the two occupants of the Toyota, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The two occupants of the Chevrolet were transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Their conditions were not immediately available in the latest reports.
The El Paso County Coroner's Office identified Shumake and Baker following the crash. The Colorado Springs Police Department's Major Crash Team continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The deaths have left families and loved ones mourning two women whose lives ended suddenly in a devastating roadway collision.
