France deploys 70,000 police officers as nationwide protests threaten fresh unrest

France is preparing for another tense weekend as authorities mobilise approximately 70,000 police officers to manage nationwide demonstrations driven by public frustration over living costs and government policies.

The protests come two weeks after riots and looting caused significant damage to businesses, public buildings and commercial properties across several French cities.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has warned of a very high risk of unrest and promised a firm response to any violence.

The demonstrations involve students, labour unions and supporters of the Yellow Vest movement, with demands ranging from improved educational facilities to lower living costs and better public services.

France's economic challenges have further complicated the government's position. Public debt is approaching 120% of economic output, while rising borrowing costs are limiting the government's ability to introduce additional spending measures.

The unrest has also created political consequences, reportedly strengthening the position of far-right leader Marine Le Pen ahead of the country's next presidential election.

Authorities are particularly concerned about the possibility of violence during the Halloween demonstrations and have warned that police may prohibit face coverings where public order is threatened.

The situation represents another significant test for President Emmanuel Macron's administration as France struggles to balance public dissatisfaction, economic pressures and national security.
