COLUMBIA, S.C. — A heartbreaking tragedy has claimed the life of 3-year-old Erin Myers, leaving his family, friends and community struggling with an unimaginable loss.
According to Columbia police, the incident happened September 3 at the Colony Apartments near Bailey Street. Authorities received a call at approximately 5:40 p.m. after Erin was shot. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.
Investigators said Erin gained access to an unattended firearm that had been left in the room. Police identified 21-year-old Tyrone Thompson Jr. as the person who allegedly left the weapon accessible. Thompson was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Police also said Thompson fled after the shooting and did not render aid. Investigators were still working to locate the firearm and determine whether additional charges would be filed.
Erin's family and friends have been remembering him with a memorial featuring balloons, candles and dinosaur toys. A balloon release was also held in his honor. His family described their loss as devastating while expressing gratitude for the memories, smiles and love Erin brought into their lives.
His death has also become a painful reminder of the importance of keeping firearms securely stored and completely out of children's reach.
At just three years old, Erin had so much life ahead of him. His family and those who loved him will now carry his memory forward.
