Elon Musk’s SpaceX has announced plans to invest $100 billion in the construction of its largest launch facility in Louisiana, a major project expected to transform the state’s aerospace industry and create thousands of jobs.

The planned facility, known as Starbase Louisiana, will be located on approximately 125,000 acres in Vermilion Parish along Louisiana’s Gulf Coast. It will become SpaceX’s fourth and largest U.S. launch site.

According to Louisiana Economic Development (LED), the project is expected to create 3,000 direct jobs over the next 10 years, with an average annual salary of approximately $92,600. The agency estimates that another 8,100 indirect jobs could be generated through contractors, suppliers and other economic activity, bringing the total expected employment impact to more than 11,100 job opportunities in the Acadiana region.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, while SpaceX is targeting the first launch from the Louisiana facility as early as 2029.

At full development, the facility is expected to contain five launch complexes, each with two launch pads, as well as propellant farms, a propellant-production facility, power-generation infrastructure and vehicle-processing facilities. Plans also include housing for employees and their families.

SpaceX intends to use the facility primarily to increase the launch frequency of its Starship spacecraft. The company says the site will eventually be capable of supporting thousands of launches annually, making it one of the most ambitious commercial spaceflight facilities ever planned.

The Louisiana location offers SpaceX access to extensive land, Gulf Coast launch trajectories and natural gas resources that can support the facility’s operations. The project is also expected to include deep-water shipping capabilities and other infrastructure designed to make the site largely self-sufficient.

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk described the planned facility as a major step toward making space travel more routine. The company has broader ambitions for Starship that include expanding satellite operations, supporting missions to the Moon and eventually Mars.

The investment is also expected to provide a major boost to businesses and workers across Louisiana. State officials say the project will create opportunities in aerospace, advanced manufacturing, construction, transportation and other industries.

Louisiana has offered SpaceX an incentive package tied to the company’s investment and job-creation commitments. Under a local tax agreement, SpaceX is expected to make an upfront payment and annual payments to local taxing authorities over 25 years.

The project has also attracted environmental attention because the proposed site includes coastal wetlands. SpaceX and Louisiana authorities have said environmental protection, wildlife and coastal restoration will form part of the project’s development plans.

If completed as planned, Starbase Louisiana could establish Louisiana as a major global centre for commercial spaceflight while significantly expanding SpaceX’s ability to launch Starship missions.
