ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — A 66-year-old Iola woman died Friday morning in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 169, leaving her family, friends and community grieving, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).
Troopers said the crash happened just before 6:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, about seven miles south of Iola. A 15-year-old boy from Beloit was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado north, alone, when it crossed the center line and struck Sherry Lynn McDown's southbound 2008 Toyota Highlander head-on. McDown died at the scene. The teen was seriously injured and taken to Freeman Health West in Joplin, Missouri. The crash log states both drivers were wearing seat belts.
The highway was closed for roughly four hours while investigators worked. KHP has not said why the pickup crossed the center line, and the crash remains under investigation.
What began as an ordinary Friday morning drive ended in a heartbreaking loss. McDown was 66, and her death leaves loved ones with an absence that can't be filled. May her family find strength and comfort in the days ahead, and may her memory be honored with love.
