A tragic incident occurred during the IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin in Madison on September 12, 2026, when a Colorado triathlete suffered a sudden medical emergency during the swim portion of the race.

The athlete was among hundreds of competitors in Lake Monona when he collapsed in the water. Rescue personnel quickly pulled him from the lake and began life-saving efforts before transporting him to the shore.

Paramedics continued efforts to revive him, and he was later taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Despite the emergency response and medical treatment, doctors were unable to stabilize him.

Officials said there were no indications of an accident or external cause and attributed the death to an unforeseen medical issue. The athlete’s identity has not been publicly released.
