A new report has raised concerns over alleged Chinese support that may have helped Iran obtain detailed satellite imagery of a U.S. military base in Jordan.
According to U.S. officials cited in the report, the high-resolution images were traced back to Chinese entities. The imagery reportedly provided Iran with detailed information about the base before the missile strike, which killed three U.S. service members.
The findings are being described by officials as some of the clearest evidence yet that Chinese-linked support for Iran may have had deadly consequences for American forces. However, officials have stressed that they are not accusing Beijing of directly taking part in the attack.
President Donald Trump responded to the reports by saying China essentially spies on the United States in the same way the U.S. spies on China.
The development comes as Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet in Washington on September 24, adding another sensitive issue to the already complicated relationship between the two countries.
