A serious airboat collision in western Broward County, Florida, has left one person dead and another critically injured.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews responded to the incident at approximately 6:19 p.m. in a remote area south of Interstate 75 and west of U.S. 27.
Two airboats were involved in the collision. Authorities have not yet released details explaining what caused the vessels to collide.
One person suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man sustained critical injuries and was transported by helicopter to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood for emergency medical treatment.
Because the crash occurred in a remote section of the Everglades, emergency crews faced difficult conditions while reaching the victims. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue deployed multiple air and ground units to assist with the response.
An air rescue helicopter was used during the operation, including a hoist procedure to remove the critically injured survivor from the remote area.
Law enforcement and rescue personnel remained involved as investigators worked to document the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Authorities have not released the identity of the person who died or the critically injured survivor.
The cause of the collision also remains under investigation. Additional information is expected as authorities continue their investigation and notify the families involved.
The incident highlights the challenges emergency crews face when responding to serious accidents in remote areas of the Everglades, where access by conventional vehicles is limited.
Further details about the victims and the circumstances of the collision are expected to be released by authorities as the investigation progresses.
