“The United States is respected as never before.” U.S. President Donald Trump has confidently repeated that assertion since his first term in office.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be true. The most recent Pew Research Center report on global attitudes concludes that views of the U.S. worsened last year to the point where more people now have positive views of China than of the U.S.
While neither Trump nor Chinese President Xi Jinping is especially popular around the world, confidence in Xi has increased to the point that he now enjoys more support than the U.S. president. It’s a sad state of affairs, but one that seems consistent with the administration’s unabashed “America First” orientation and its mercurial and temperamental leader.
