The dog days of summer in Japan may sap energy and slow almost everything down but the national sport continues apace.
Throughout the month of August, the Japan Sumo Association’s summer regional tour sees most of the organization’s biggest stars perform in numerous locations across the east and north of the country.
With 28 event days in 27 different locations, it’s a punishing schedule, and one that leaves little time for rest and recovery between the July and September meets.
