The death of Tasia Fortune has drawn widespread attention in Jackson, Mississippi, after investigators testified that the circumstances surrounding the discovery of her body were different from what the scene initially appeared to indicate.
During a preliminary hearing on September 25, Jackson Police Detective Samuel Dukes testified that Fortune was apparently killed following a dispute involving drugs. Citing the medical examiner's opinion, Dukes said the scene where her body was found had been staged. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the exact cause of death or explained why her body was placed there afterward.
Fortune was found behind a vacant home in west Jackson on August 3. The circumstances surrounding the scene drew significant public attention because they recalled the history of racial violence and lynchings in Mississippi. Authorities have emphasized that investigators have not established why the scene was staged.
Several people have been arrested in connection with the case. Jarques Ratliff, 51, has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bond. Earnest Lloyd Jr., 25, was also arrested and charged with murder. A third suspect, Eric Clark, 45, surrendered to authorities on September 25 and was charged with murder.
Fortune's mother, Christy Spivey, has remembered her daughter as a mother of four who had hoped to start a cleaning business and build a more stable life. The preliminary hearing involving Ratliff is scheduled to resume September 30.
