Scott Worthy, 57, Remembered After Death in Clayton County Jail

The life of Scott Worthy, 57, of Jonesboro, Georgia, ended after a period of severe physical deterioration while he was detained at the Clayton County Jail.

According to the Clayton County Medical Examiner's Office, Worthy was taken from the jail to Grady Memorial Hospital on August 30, 2025. He died there on September 6, approximately one week after being hospitalized.

The medical examiner determined that Worthy's death resulted from complications of sepsis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, a serious bacterial infection. The manner of death was initially listed as undetermined but was later changed to homicide following the investigation.

The medical examiner's report said Worthy had experienced significant physical deterioration while in custody and had become unable to perform basic daily activities without assistance. According to the report, Worthy told emergency medical personnel that he had been unable to get up, obtain food or use the restroom for approximately four days.

Paramedics reportedly found Worthy's clothing saturated with bodily fluids and documented a strong odor of urine and feces. Investigators also found evidence suggesting that his condition had not been identified and addressed in a timely manner while he was under custodial supervision.

The medical examiner concluded that failures to timely identify and respond to Worthy's physical deterioration materially contributed to the circumstances surrounding his infection and death.

The homicide classification is a forensic determination and does not by itself mean that anyone has been criminally charged or found legally responsible for Worthy's death. Authorities have not announced criminal charges in connection with the case.

Scott Worthy's death has raised difficult questions about the conditions and care provided to people held in custody. For his family and those who knew him, his passing remains a painful loss.

As questions surrounding his final days continue, Worthy is remembered as a 57-year-old man whose life ended after a serious deterioration while in county custody.
