Nicholas “Nic” Balkum, a highly regarded member of New Zealand’s entertainment industry, has died following a medical event at TSB Arena in Wellington on Friday morning while working during the World of WearableArt season.

Originally from the United States, Balkum moved to New Zealand in 2014 and built a career as a skilled rigger and technician. His work spanned theatre, live events, film, circus, and aerial performance, earning him respect among colleagues and production teams.

Throughout his career, Balkum worked with several organisations and productions, including Cirque du Soleil. He also co-founded and ran YOOCrew in New Zealand and worked closely with Theatrical Solutions. At the time of his death, he was serving as Head Rigger for World of WearableArt, a production that held deep personal and professional significance for him.

Colleagues remembered Balkum as calm, approachable, and dedicated to his work. Many described him as more than a colleague, highlighting the close friendships he built throughout the industry and the support he offered those around him.

Emergency responders, including Wellington Free Ambulance, New Zealand Police, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand, attended the scene. His colleagues also expressed appreciation for the support provided by Wellington Venues and World of WearableArt following the incident.

Balkum is survived by his fiancée, Laura, along with family members, friends, and colleagues across the entertainment industry. His loved ones and the YOOCrew team have requested privacy as they grieve. Details of a celebration of his life are expected to be announced later.
