A mother in Fiji is calling for justice and accountability after her six-year-old daughter, Mishti, sustained a serious injury during a physical education class at Labasa Sangam Primary School.
According to the account provided, the incident occurred on June 4, 2026, when an older student allegedly fell on Mishti during class. The child reportedly remained in pain before being moved to a classroom by another student. Her mother, Kartika Chand, was contacted by the school and took her daughter to the hospital for treatment.
Medical examinations reportedly revealed a severe fracture of Mishti’s right femur. She underwent six weeks of traction at Labasa Hospital before being transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva for specialist paediatric orthopaedic care. Three months after the incident, her mother says Mishti still struggles to walk comfortably and has been unable to return to school or resume normal childhood activities.
Kartika has also raised concerns about medical expenses and the lack of progress in the investigation. A formal police complaint alleging negligence and failure of duty of care was reportedly lodged on June 15. The family says it has not received a final update. An internal Education Ministry investigation was also conducted, but the report has reportedly not been shared with the family.
The account further states that, on September 2, a senior Education Ministry official warned the mother against continued communication about the matter, saying it could obstruct the investigation. The family and its supporters are calling for transparency, accountability, and assistance with Mishti’s medical needs.
The case has raised concerns about children's safety in schools, the duty of care owed to students, and the importance of timely investigations. Supporters are urging Fiji’s Human Rights Commission and the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection to examine the matter and help ensure that Mishti receives the care she needs.
