The latest phase in the evolution of Japanese soccer begins on Friday night, as the J. League kicks off its first fall-spring season.
A move to align with the European calendar has been made in part to strengthen the position of Japanese clubs in the transfer market — especially when it comes to selling players, with those heading overseas during the previous spring-fall format often doing so in the middle of the J. League season and leaving for comparatively small fees.
The shift also brings the Japanese campaign in line with the Asian Football Confederation’s continental competition schedule, and reduces the number of matches played at the height of summer — when players’ performance levels dip, and extreme temperatures increase the risks for participants and spectators alike.
