DeKalb County, Georgia, is mourning a devastating tragedy after 7-month-old Kalayia Tolbert and 33-year-old Cameron Gabriel Kemp of Covington lost their lives following a 10-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 late Saturday night, October 10, 2026. What began as a high-speed pursuit ended in heartbreak, leaving grieving loved ones and an entire community reflecting on two lives lost under tragic circumstances.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, the incident began around 11:59 p.m. when a trooper spotted an Audi traveling approximately 110 mph in a 60 mph zone without headlights. The driver reportedly accelerated away when the trooper attempted a traffic stop. The pursuit continued along I-20 until the Audi exited at Wesley Chapel Road, where Kemp lost control, struck a guardrail, and collided with multiple vehicles.
Ten vehicles were involved in the devastating crash. Three infants traveling in one of the struck vehicles were rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Tragically, little Kalayia succumbed to her injuries. Kemp was also transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Seven months was all the time Kalayia was given to experience this beautiful world. She deserved countless birthdays, warm embraces, bedtime lullabies, and a lifetime of precious memories. Her story is heartbreaking because so many chapters she deserved to live will remain unwritten.
For those mourning both lives, the pain of this tragedy cannot be measured in words. Behind every name is a life, a story, and people left to grieve.
May Kalayia’s family find strength in their darkest hours, and may everyone affected by this devastating crash find comfort and peace.
Rest in peace, little Kalayia Tolbert and Cameron Gabriel Kemp. May the memories of those lost remain forever in the hearts of those who mourn them. 🕊️💔
