Some lives leave a lasting mark through the service they give to others.

Today, we remember Elvin Hernandez, 60, a Connecticut Department of Transportation worker whose life came to an unexpected end while he was carrying out his duties on Interstate 95 in Fairfield.

According to state officials, Hernandez was performing road maintenance on I-95 south near Exit 21 on Friday morning when he was struck by a vehicle. The incident occurred at approximately 10:35 a.m., according to current local reporting.

Hernandez had worked for the Connecticut Department of Transportation since 2010 and was based at the agency’s Stratford garage. His work formed part of the daily effort to maintain Connecticut’s roads and highways.

News of his passing prompted tributes from Connecticut officials and colleagues.

Governor Ned Lamont expressed condolences to Hernandez’s family, friends and CTDOT colleagues while highlighting the risks faced by highway workers. Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz also described his death as a reminder of the dangers road maintenance employees face while working to keep highways safe.

CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said Hernandez’s death deeply affected the agency and described him as a dedicated employee who was doing his job when the incident occurred.
