The Australian High Commission in Nigeria has congratulated Team Nigeria for its outstanding performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where Nigeria emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked nation.
In a message shared via their official Facebook page, the High Commission also hailed Team Australia for topping the medals table for a third consecutive Commonwealth Games.
“Congratulations to Team Australia on topping the medal table at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games for a third consecutive Games,” the High Commission said.
It added: “We also celebrate Team Nigeria, Africa’s top-performing nation, on an outstanding seventh-place finish.
“The Australian High Commission proudly recognises the dedication, talent and sportsmanship of athletes from both countries.
“Well done, Team Australia and Team Nigeria!”
Nigeria concluded the Games with 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, finishing seventh overall and ahead of every other African nation.
Australia dominated the Games with 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze medals for a total of 171 medals, while England and Canada finished second and third, respectively.

Several historic performances highlighted Nigeria’s campaign.
Samuel Ogazi became the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 400 metres title, while Ezekiel Nathaniel made history as Nigeria’s first Commonwealth champion in the men’s 400m hurdles.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi also broke new ground by becoming the first Nigerian to win the men’s shot put title at the Games.
The athletics team accounted for the largest share of Nigeria’s medals, with Ruth Usoro winning silver in the women’s long jump, Udodi Onwuzurike claiming silver in the men’s 200m, and Ella Onojuvwevwo ending Nigeria’s 32-year wait for a women’s 400m medal with bronze.
Nigeria also won medals in weightlifting, para sports and judo to complete one of its most successful Commonwealth Games outings in recent years.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games featured athletes from 74 nations and territories, competing across 10 sports for 1,168 medals in 215 medal events.
