The Milledgeville community is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Katherine Elizabeth Abernathy following a traffic crash in Putnam County, Georgia.
According to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, the crash occurred around 4:42 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Greensboro Road and Loch Way near Eatonton.
Investigators said Katherine was driving a Honda CR-V and was attempting to turn left onto the highway when her vehicle was struck by a Ford F-150 traveling north.
Katherine died at the scene. The driver of the Ford, a 21-year-old man, was transported in a private vehicle to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital for treatment of suspected broken arms, according to the sheriff.
Katherine was a senior at Georgia Military College Preparatory School in Milledgeville. Her passing has left classmates, teachers, family members and friends remembering a young student whose life ended at 17.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
