The House of Representatives candidate of the African Democratic Congress for Maiduguri Metropolitan Federal Constituency, Bulama Mullima, has sponsored the fumigation of streets and residential areas in Gwange, Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of efforts to reduce the prevalence of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases in the metropolis.
The exercise, which was carried out on several streets within the community, attracted residents who commended the intervention, describing it as a timely response to the growing cases of malaria, particularly during the rainy season.
Residents who spoke during the exercise said stagnant water and poor environmental conditions had contributed to the increasing mosquito population in the area, making malaria one of the most common illnesses affecting households.
One of the coordinators of the fumigation exercise, Abdullahi Muhammad, explained that the intervention formed part of the ADC candidate’s commitment to improving public health and promoting a healthier environment for residents of Maiduguri.
He clarified that the initiative was designed to complement efforts aimed at reducing the spread of malaria through environmental sanitation and the destruction of mosquito breeding sites.
“The fumigation exercise is one of the interventions sponsored by our House of Representatives candidate, Bulama Mullima, to support the fight against malaria in Maiduguri Metropolitan,” Muhammad stressed.
He added, “We understand that malaria remains one of the major health challenges affecting many families, especially children and pregnant women. That is why the candidate decided to sponsor this exercise as part of his contribution towards protecting the health of the people.
“We commenced the exercise in the Gwange area because of its population and the need to reduce mosquito infestation in the community. The exercise is expected to improve environmental hygiene and minimise the spread of malaria-causing mosquitoes.
“This intervention is not about politics alone. It is about giving back to society and supporting initiatives that directly impact the well-being of the people. We believe that a healthy community is essential for development,” Muhammad said.
He pointed out that the fumigation team covered several locations within the area and expressed optimism that the exercise would significantly reduce mosquito infestation and improve public health.
He appealed to the metropolise residents to complement the exercise by maintaining clean surroundings, clearing blocked drainage channels and avoiding practices that encourage mosquito breeding.

“We also want residents to play their part by keeping their environment clean because fumigation alone cannot eliminate mosquitoes if waste continues to accumulate or stagnant water is left unattended,” Muhammad urged the people.
“Environmental sanitation is everyone’s responsibility, and when communities work together, the impact of interventions like this becomes more meaningful,” he maintained.
Residents of the area expressed appreciation to the ADC candidate, saying the initiative would provide relief to many families who spend significant amounts on malaria treatment.
One of the beneficiaries, Muhammad Ibrahim, described the exercise as a commendable intervention, urging other political office holders and aspirants to emulate such people-oriented programmes.
“We are grateful to Bulama Mullima for sponsoring this fumigation exercise. It is something that directly affects the lives of ordinary people because almost every household has someone suffering from malaria from time to time,” Ibrahim said.
He continued, “This exercise shows concern for the health and welfare of the people. We hope it will continue and be extended to other communities within Maiduguri Metropolitan.
“We also want other politicians to emulate this kind of initiative. Leadership should not only be about making promises during campaigns. Programmes that improve the lives of the people are what communities need the most,” Ibrahim said.
Another resident, Aisha Ali, pointed out that the exercise came at a time when many families were battling recurring malaria infections.
She said, “Mosquitoes have become a major problem in this area, especially during the rainy season. Many parents spend a lot of money treating malaria, and some children fall sick repeatedly.
“We are happy that somebody has taken the initiative to address the problem. We believe this exercise will reduce the mosquito population and make our environment healthier.”
The residents appealed for similar public health interventions to be sustained across other parts of Maiduguri, noting that preventive measures such as fumigation and environmental sanitation remain critical in combating malaria in the state.
